Recovery of olive oil by-products through bio/hydro chars production for agricultural soil fertilization and environment preservation

Expected results

FERTICHAR envisages turning the huge and abundant amount of Mediterranean wastes (solid and liquid olive mill wastes) to valuable materials with important added values on:

  1. agriculture since the produced chars will replace the use of synthetic fertilizers, improve soil carbon contents, stimulate microbial activity and hence crops growth
  2. environment preservation, because FERTICHAR will permit the management of huge amounts of liquid and solid residues generated by olive mills and the used chars as amendments will permit the retention of organic pollutants such as pesticides WP5 and WP6.

Finally, FERTICHAR will permit an important socio-economic development thanks to both dynamic involvement of the main concerned actors (farmers, olive mills owners, public institutions) and also the possibility of crops diversification and increase of farmers’ incomes through specific crops cultivation with high added values and the access to new markets in both Europe and Africa
